Mary was born in in London; she was the second of six children. Her father was an alcoholic and her mother was a battered house wife. She had very little formal education and was largely self-taught. When she was nineteen she went out to earn her own living.

Mary Wollstonecraft is sometimes called the "mother of feminism," as her main goal was to see women gain access to segments of society largely off-limits to them in the 18th century. Her body of work is primarily concerned with women's rights. In her book, "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman," now considered a classic of feminist history and feminist theory , Wollstonecraft argued primarily for the right of women to be educated. She believed that through education would come emancipation. Wollstonecraft accepted that women's sphere is in the home, a common belief during her time, but she did not isolate the home from public life as many others had.
Women identified with the goals of the revolution and often led riots against merchants being unfair with what they are selling. Women also decided it was time to point out political ideals. These activist women had crusaded for the promotion of their civil rights, sexual freedom, and pursued careers which were once forbidden to them. Activists women of the 20th century engaged in various crusades in order to emancipate women and change the conventional stereotyping society that continued to compartmentalized people according to their gender.
