What is critical thinking and why is it important in nursing

About essay
March 10, NurseJournal Staff. Clinical skills in nursing are obviously important, but critical thinking is at the core of being a good nurse. Critical thinking skills are very important in the nursing field because they are what you use to prioritize and make key decisions that can save lives. These types of skills are important not just for clinical care, but for making important policy decisions. For you to become a successful nurse, you will need to learn how a nurse thinks on the job. In nursing school, you will learn how to do an IV, dress a wound and to save lives , but there is more to being a nurse than just having good clinical skills.

Critical Thinking Skills

Why Is Critical Thinking Important? - Words | Bartleby

Critical thinking is the skill of questioning your own thought processes and assumptions while thinking about a problem. Nurses apply critical thinking skills to help them make better decisions on behalf of their patients. First, know what problem you want to solve, such as determining the cause of a patient's symptoms. Second, know why you want to solve the problem -- for instance, to control the patient's pain. Third, know what perspective you bring to the problem. Your perspective includes your training as a nurse, but also your life experiences and worldview.

What Is Pathophysiology in Nursing?

I believe that the nurse leader ought to first have the nursing expertise and be able to utilize interpersonal skills to influence and empower the other nurses to deliver quality nursing care. Importantly, I would only consider nursing leadership effective when the leader is directly and actively involved in clinical care provision as that provides opportunities to improve care provision by influencing the nurses that one is leading. Notably, improvements would not be guaranteed if nursing leadership is restricted to management as leadership is founded on the strength of the opinions that the leaders raise, which I believe applies to nursing profession. On considering the aspect of interpersonal skills, I would focus my nursing leadership efforts on team building, establishing respect and confidence in other nurses, coming up with a vision and empowering them.
Critical thinking is the analysis of facts to form a judgment. Critical thinking is self-directed , self-disciplined , self- monitored , and self- corrective thinking. It entails effective communication and problem-solving abilities as well as a commitment to overcome native egocentrism [3] [4] and sociocentrism. The earliest records of critical thinking are the teachings of Socrates recorded by Plato.
